How should ESD protection and grounding be implemented at an RF test station?
Build an ESD protected area to ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340-5-1. Operators ground through a wrist strap with a built-in resistor of roughly 1 MΩ; the usual acceptance window for a person-to-ground path is 750 kΩ to 35 MΩ. The bench mat and the metal enclosure connect to the same common ground point, floor resistance stays below 1×10⁹ Ω, and wrist straps are checked each shift. Metal parts must never float, or a potential difference forms between the operator and the equipment.
Key points
- Follow ANSI/ESD S20.20 and IEC 61340-5-1 as the framework
- Wrist strap with a ~1 MΩ resistor; person-to-ground 750 kΩ to 35 MΩ
- Bench mat and enclosure to one common ground point
- Floor resistance below 1×10⁹ Ω
- No floating metal; check straps every shift
